Mom (Spring 2004)

Motivation

For myself:
Need the right amount of discipline
Need the feeling of accomplishment as I continue my works
What have I accomplished this semester as a whole? Was that a lot?
How far have I gone this semester?
What about today? Am I busy today?

For back home (in Korea):
Things that are hard to say in words:
I ran out of money (Please send me more money)
I ran out of seaweed (Please send me more seaweed)
I have accomplished my goal! (Congrat me!)
Should've pre-discussed about what my goal was this semester
I share every status (school wise) with my parents by phone, but can't call every time

Idea, Inspiration

Display (A picture (LCD screen) hanging on the wall) :
A picture frame that displays all sorts of information discussed before this in a subtle way, not drawing too much of the user’s attention
The same picture will be displayed back home at parents’ house
Changes over time with my input

Use ‘Ship Jang Seng Do’:
A Korean traditional art work that 10 long living creatures (sun, mountain, water, rock, cloud, a pine tree, never dying plant, turtle, deer, a crane) are drawn
Each creature represents a course work this semester

Use four sides of the picture frame:
Each side will represent a dynamic status about:
Money
Seaweed
Today’s schedule
Current time within this semester’s time frame

When the semester has started:

When the semester has finished:

Related works:
Informative Art (Holmquist, ACM 2003)
Digital family portraits (Mynatt, CHI 2001)
InfoCanvas (Stasko, CHI 2001)
Aesthetic information collages (Fogarty, Forlizzi, Hudson, UIST 2001)

(Due to my lack of lit review, I found out that family portrait was also using the frame to show awareness information after the project)
